Carlos Navarro, born in Havana, Cuba, spent his early years in New York before moving to Miami in his teens, where he has lived ever since. His artistic style, known as “Pop Suave,” fuses Pop Art influences from artists like Andy Warhol and Keith Haring with traditional Cuban, Miami, and other contemporary themes reflecting his heritage. Despite never returning to Cuba, Navarro often depicts the island through “instilled memories” inspired by the rich cultural traditions he grew up with in the United States. His work spans various themes, including nostalgic, political, humorous, and sensual subjects.
Navarro’s art has been exhibited both nationally and internationally, with numerous commissions from prominent brands and organizations, such as Perry Ellis International, Bacardi, and the Super Bowl XLI Host Committee. He has also participated in large-scale public art projects, including Miami Guitar Town and ‘Flamingos in the Gables,’ and his work is displayed in several public spaces across Miami. His portraits include famous personalities like Al Pacino, Michelle Pfeiffer, Dwayne Johnson, and icons from Cuban culture such as Celia Cruz and Compay Segundo.
In addition to his artistic endeavors, Navarro has been deeply involved in philanthropic activities, supporting various causes and organizations such as the March of Dimes, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and the American Diabetes Association. Recognized for his community contributions, he received proclamations from Miami Dade County and the City of Miami, which declared November 24, 2000, as Carlos A. Navarro Day. He has also been featured in numerous publications and TV segments, underscoring his impact on both the art world and his community.
